A bright Saturn rises into the evening, giving you a calm, steady target once twilight fades.

• Saturn in the east: It rises at 7:41 PM Eastern and becomes easier to see around 8:41 PM, staying observable until about 5:50 AM. Choose a spot with an open eastern horizon, because it starts low.
• The waxing crescent Moon: It is 28% lit, rises at 12:43 PM, and is already up when sunset arrives at 7:10 PM. Watch it move from the southeast toward the southwest, where it sets at 9:44 PM. Easy to spot without binoculars.
• Bonus, meteor activity: The Southern Taurids are active from September 10 through November 20, but their October 10 peak is still weeks away. Tonight is better for a planet than a meteor watch.
