Tonight’s Sky – A nearly full Moon brightens the evening – September 24th

A nearly full Moon brightens tonight’s sky, rising before sunset and making the evening easy to enjoy from your own backyard.

WHAT TO SEE

  • Waxing gibbous Moon: It rises in the east at 5:57 PM Eastern. At 94.5% illuminated, it is an easy no-equipment target from dusk onward.
  • Sunset: It arrives at 6:56 PM in the west. After sunset, the Moon is easy to spot without equipment.

BONUS

  • The Southern Taurids are active tonight, from September 10 through November 20. These slow meteors reach their listed maximum on October 10, with a possible rate of about five per hour, so tonight is a quiet preview rather than the peak.

MOON NOTE: Waxing gibbous, 94.5% illuminated, rising at 5:57 PM local time.
