Waning crescent Moon in close conjunction with Saturn in the pre-dawn sky with Milky Way overhead

Tonight’s Sky – Harvest Moon rises near Saturn – September 26th

Tonight, the full Harvest Moon rises near Saturn, giving you an easy, bright pairing in the eastern sky.

  • The Moon leads: Look low in the east around 6:40 PM Eastern, just before sunset at 6:52 PM. The 99.6% illuminated Moon is easy to spot, even from a bright neighborhood.
  • Find Saturn: As the sky darkens after sunset, use the Moon as your guide. Saturn sits nearby and becomes a steady, naked-eye point after about 8 PM. It stays visible through most of the night, so you have plenty of time.
  • Stay with the pairing: The Moon and Saturn climb higher through the evening. Face east first, then follow them toward the south later on. Saturn is easy to see without special equipment.
  • Bonus, meteor activity: The Southern Taurids are active now, but their October 10 peak is still about two weeks away. Keep expectations modest, tonight is a Moon and Saturn evening.

Moon note: The Moon reaches full phase at 12:49 PM Eastern today, then rises at about 6:40 PM, essentially full and 99.6% illuminated.

Step outside after dinner, look east, and let the bright Moon show you where to begin. For more warm, easy sky notes, join the NOOMMED newsletter.
