Tonight’s Sky – Saturn shines on opposition eve – October 3rd

You can catch Saturn tonight just before its October 4 opposition, when it sits opposite the Sun in our sky. (In-The-Sky.org)

  • Saturn: Look east after dark, then toward the south around midnight. It is an easy naked-eye target as a bright point; you need a telescope to see more than that. Tomorrow’s opposition makes this a good weekend to give it your attention (In-The-Sky.org).
  • A Moon-free start: Sunset is about 6:41 PM Eastern at our mid-Atlantic reference point, while the Moon rises around midnight in nearby Allentown. Use the early evening for a relaxed look around before moonlight returns (sunset table; Allentown Moon table).

Bonus: Orionids and Southern Taurids are active, but neither is near its listed peak tonight. Treat any meteor as a bonus rather than expecting a busy display (Royal Observatory).

Moon note: Last quarter occurs today at 9:25 AM Eastern; tonight the Moon is waning toward a crescent, rising around midnight (phase calendar; Allentown Moon table).
